REMI's 2nd Vet Visit..

Remi didn't seem too excited to go to the vet on Friday, but it had to be done. We were pretty excited to see how much weight he had actually gained and we wanted to show off how awesome our boy was coming along.

The ladies at The Sugarland Pet Hospital were pretty surprised to see how alert he was compared to the last time he was there. A couple of people in the waiting room were very curious as to what had happened to REMI and whether or not he was going to make it. As usual, we were positive about our boy and how great he was doing.

Dr. Brust was pretty damn surprised when he walked into the room and saw REMI. He couldn't believe it had only been two weeks since we had last been there. REMI was weighed and we were a bit sad that he had only gained 3.5lbs. But better than nothing right? Dr. Brust told us to feed him a cup and a half three times a day rather than just one cup three times a day like we were doing. He said his skin looked much better and that the Mange wasn't as bad as before cause he didn't smell so bad.

We told him how great he's been with us and how he eats all of his food. He wags his tail, kisses us, and follows Elliott everywhere he goes. I think he might be in love with him, haha!

Dr. Brust gave us some more meds and told us to keep up the good work. REMI also got his
rabies vaccine and he didn't seem to care too much about the needle. Dr. Brust also trimmed his nails and gave him plenty of treats.

Don't think I mentioned how much our first visit cost us. Since we want to bring awareness to dogs who are sick and homeless it only seems fair that we tell you exactly how much we're spending on our boy REMI.

Our first visit cost us roughly about $160 and Friday's visit cost us $73. The big bag of food that we bought him cost us $45. We feed our girls Bil-Jac and they seem to love it. So we decided to buy him the same brand but puppy food to strengthen him up.

Overall, REMI is doing great and we couldn't be any happier. While Elliott and I are at work, Elliott's brother, Allen takes REMI on walks and sometimes jogs around our neighborhood. People are starting to notice that the dog they see, is the same boy who was roaming the streets a couple of weeks ago. Lots of people are telling us congratulations and that we're going to heaven. We aren't doing this to look good or to make ourselves feel any better. Our only concern is to give REMI the life he deserves and the life he was robbed of when he was put on the street.

Elliott & Allen talked to our neighbor today about REMI and all the strays on our block this morning. Apparently REMI was roaming our block last summer and then disappeared for a while. Thankfully he came back at the right time and showed up at the right place. I grew up in the house we currently live in and I'm pretty damn surprised how many strays there are now. It can be a bit scary too due to there being more than one dog roaming the streets. These dogs are roaming in packs, not safe for them or for us. I'm not sure what's going on with Houston's Animal Control, but what I do know is that they are failing these dogs and all of it's citizens.

We can't save them all but what we can do is encourage people to educate themselves a bit more and stop breeding the dogs they do have. You cannot be a responsible dog owner if you're breeding constantly. We need to spay and neuter as soon as they become of age in order to keep the dog population under control. We were given the okay from Dr. Brust to neuter REMI in four weeks. Next Saturday we have another appt and Dr. Brust will scrape off a bit of skin from REMI to see how the Mange is coming along.

It's pretty exciting to see REMI and his little pink spots, his skin is seriously looking a lot better. We also noticed today that he has hair growing pretty much everywhere. Not much right now, just little patches here and there..but we are pretty impressed.

Elliott & I want to thank everyone for their concerns about our boy. It means a lot to us that there are people who care and are genuinely interested in REMI's well being.

Showing some love...

We've received lots of love from friends and family since Remi came into our lives. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by people who care as much as we do.

REMI would like to send out an I-love-you-so-much-tail-wag to Marilla and Jay. As soon as they found out that Remi was in need of some help, they sent a sweet contribution and hooked up our site with an adorable Header!

We need more people like you two in our world! Thank you so much for caring!! We are forever grateful!!

Off to the Vet we go..

Elliott & I had to work on December 24th, which meant we wouldn't be able to take our Christmas puppy to a vet until after work. All we did that day was think about the dog and get choked up. We just couldn't understand why someone would let him get that bad. That morning before we left for work, a neighbor told us that he had seen the dog roaming our street for about 3 weeks. I wanted to ask him why he never helped the dog, but I felt it would be pointless. I would get an ignorant reply, which would then lead me to get really upset.

Elliott ended up calling his best friend's wife, Becca for some help. Becca works for The Sugarland Pet Hospital which we are very familiar with.

Our Jack Russell, Leana Little was apparently hit by a car a couple years ago and ended up with Becca at The Sugarland Pet Hospital, hence the short hine leg. One of the Chihuahua's also had some teeth removed and was spayed there as well. Becca was able to get us an appointment with one of the Vet's for Friday afternoon.

We rushed home after work and loaded our Christmas puppy up and headed to see Becca. We received lots and lots of love from everyone at the Hospital. Everyone was very very concerned for our new puppy. Asking where we found him, how old he was, what breed he was...to which we answered to the best of our abilities. Our puppy was real scared but once he saw treats, he relaxed a bit and let the Doctor and the techs check him out.

The good news was that although he did have Mange, which we knew, he has the type of Mange that is curable. It's called Demodicosis or Red Mange. It's caused by a sensitivity to and an overpopulation of Demodex canis if the animal's immune system is unable to keep the mites under control. There are two types: localized and generalized. Localized consists of 4 spots or less, which we know isn't the case with our puppy cause he has it all over his body. Most dogs are immune to demodectic mange, however dogs with compromised immune systems and the elderly are at a higher risk. Another good news is that this type of Mange is not contagious to humans.

We were also told that he didn't have heartworm issues (yay!) and by the look of his teeth (which are super white) he must be under a year or about a year old. This leads me to believe that his previous owner must have either freaked out when the skin started looking bad or they just didn't want to spend any money on him. Easiest move for people who no longer want their dogs or cats is to open the door and let them go. This is may be the easiest way, but it's definitely NOT the best way to treat our four-legged friends. It then becomes the problem of the city or town, who doesn't always care about them. Leading them to capture them and put them to sleep, regardless of their health or age. Not to mention a lot of them are run over by cars or mistreated by people on the streets.

The Vet gave us some meds for our puppy and also gave us some bedding, which was very generous of course. We were told to shower our puppy every other day with medicated cream so that his skin could get better. We talked a bit more with Becca about the puppy and the four females at home. She told us to keep them seperated for a while due to the puppy being weak and probably a bit insecure. It's not healthy for any dog to be in a pack and be insecure. That makes them very vulnerable to attacks and stresses them out. Another reason to keep him away is because we are not sure if he has any other sicknesses like kennel cough. We won't know until he's a bit healthy and we can do a full check-up on him. We paid and left for home with our new puppy. We were estatic that he didn't need to be put down and that if we kept up with his Vet visits and meds that he would survive this horrible nightmare.

After that visit Elliott named our puppy Remi, short for reminder.
Reminder of how lucky we, as in us & our four dogs really are and how crappy Humans can truly be.
Remi with his new Christmas bone!

Stay tuned for more on our new puppy Remi!

P.S. We've said it many, many times..but we are very very thankful for The Sugarland Pet Hospital. I don't think anyone else would have treated us as sweet and loving as everyone in that office did.

Welcome..

Hi there, Welcome to The REMI Project! Our names are Elliott & Ariana and we're glad you stopped by.

The REMI project began on December 22nd, 2011, near 5:00pm. Elliott & I were just getting home from a long day at work. Across the street I saw what looked like a terrified dog. I parked my car and crossed the street to check out the dog a bit closer. Before I continue there is something you must know about us. Elliott & I currently have four dogs of our own. A Boxer with a missing toe, a Jack Russell with a short hine leg, a Chihuahua with missing teeth, and her daughter, who is a complete spazz! We have a big soft spot in our hearts for all types of dogs.

So let's continue..
As we got closer to the dog we immediately knew he needed our help. He was skin and bones and had an obvious skin disorder. Mange is what came to our minds, due to the hair loss and the dark rough skin we saw. We've never had a dog with Mange and had no idea what we would be up against. But that wasn't important to us, right now all we wanted to do was feed him. It took us an hour or so before he would approach the bowl with food. We called multiple places for help but the numbers we called were either closed or had no idea how to help.

After eating all the food, he walked back across the street and sat down where we initially saw him. We continued to call him and coax him with food so that we could somehow get him some help. Elliott followed him down the street with beef treats but he wanted nothing to do with him. After a while we started losing hope. We wanted so badly to help, yet we felt so helpless. We set up a big crate with towels, water, and some blankets covering the crate to keep out the winter wind. We left for dinner with some friends in hopes that he would be in or near the crate when we returned home.

When we returned home we were pretty damn surprised to see him snuggled up in the crate. We tried closing the crate but couldn't succeed, he was far too scared to stick around. I filled up his water bowl and we called it a night.

The next morning we were pretty sure he would still be in there. If we knew anything about dogs it was that if you feed them, they'll always come back. And there he was..our little Christmas puppy. After feeding him and talking to him in our sweet soft voices, we left for work. It was our goal to find out where we could take him to either fix him up or stop the suffering by euthanasia before the holidays....
